In this unit you will learn about how to say apologies to others and respond the apologies.

Exercise 1. a.
Instruction: 
You will listen to and talk about some conversations of saying apologies to others and responding the apologies. Imagine that you make mistakes and need to apologize, or your friend makes mistakes and you respond his apologies. As you listen to the conversation, try to see in your mind how to say and respond to apologies.

Conversation 1



Situation: 
It is extremely crowded in the cafetaria. Sandra, wearing a backpack, has her arms full of library books and is carrying umbrella over her arm. She sees a free spot at a table on the other side of the room.

Sandra  : (bumping the pack into someone) I’m sorry. It’s so crowded today. 
Person 1: Yeah. It’s OK.
Sandra  : (stepping on someone’s books) Oops, sorry.
Person 2: No harm done.
Sandra  : (poking someone with the umbrella) Oh, I’m so sorry.

Sandra  : (putting her books at the empty) Is this place free?
Person 4: As a matter of fact, this guy asked me to save it for him.
Person 5: Yeah, that’s my place.
Sandra  : Oh, I’m sorry. I didn’t see anyone here. (picks up her books)
Person 5: No. That’s OK. You take it. It’ll be easier for me to move.

Noelia was in hurry. While she was walking fast, she bumped into Paul.

Paul: Noelia! I am so sorry! Are you OK?
Noelia: I think so. That was lucky.

Noelia: That's all right. I shouldn't have been running.
Paul: No, no, I should have been paying attention. 
Noelia: And they teach you not to run inside at school!

Helen say sorry to her friend and flatmate, Tim. Helen is sorry for shouting angrily at Tim a few days before, when he had asked her a polite question about the possibility of paying less rent.

Helen    : Tim, have you got a minute?
Tim        : Well, it's not like I've got a ton of things to do, is it?
Helen    : No, no, it's not. Tim, I want to apologise for the way I spoke to you the other day.
Tim        : Oh yeah?
Helen    : Yeah. I was well out of order. I've been having a hard time lately but that's no excuse. I'm sorry.
Tim        : Thanks Helen. Well I suppose I should say sorry too. I'm unemployed but it's not the end of the world. And I put you in a difficult position, asking for a discount.
Helen    : That's OK. Would a slap-up meal make us friends again?
Tim        : Oh, go on then!

It was night and we could see a light in a house. We walked to the house and asked the man there for help. The man said, “I will fix your car tomorrow. I can take you to a hotel tonight. Follow me.”

On the way to the hotel, I was disappointed because the town seemed small and unexciting. But in the town center, we saw some fireworks and heard some music. There was a festival and a fair! After we left our luggage at the hotel, we went and joined the festival. We had a fantastic evening and it was a great start to our vacation!

I just returned from Puerto Rico, where I was visiting my uncle for the holidays. It was difficult getting there. First, my mom overslept and we almost missed our flight. Then, the airplane was a nightmare. It made me remember the first time I was on a plane. I was six-year-old at the time, and I clutched my mother’s hands for dear life! This time, the problem was that a huge storm was approaching.

Right after we took off, the plane started bouncing. At one point, I made a loud noise, and a passenger stared at me with an angry look. I felt sort of silly, but what was her problem? I mean, hadn’t she ever seen anyone startled before? Actually, I think she was just as afraid as I was.

Although it seemed like forever, we finally did touch down in Puerto Rico. We had a wonderful time there. How was you holiday? Write me back and let me know!

Sports and Healthy Lifestyles Week

Last week our school had a Sport and Healthy Lifestyles Week. The best day for me was Monday, because on Monday we had three activities—yoga, softball and cricket.

We first had yoga with Mrs Rowe and Mrs Godleman. We did all kinds of stretches and exercises. We also did the “salute to the sun”. Mrs Godleman told us that in India they do the “salute to the sun” at dawn when the sun comes up. The children also do it at school in the morning. I liked yoga. It was very relaxing but it wasn’t my favourite thing of the day.

After recess, we had softball with two instructors called Craig and Andrew. Before we started, the instructors explained the basic rules. Our team got the field first while the other tam got to bat. I almost got a catch, but josh pushed me out of the way and then he didn’t even catch it himself! Then it came time for our team to bat. My first hit wasn’t a vary good hit and I got out. But my next two hits were really good (for me, anyway) and I go two home runs! I was extremely happy. I liked softball. It was my favourite activity of the day.

After lunch, we had cricket with an instructor called David. We were split into two groups. One group got to bowl at wickets while the other group got to hit balls at little cones. I got to bat. I didn’t like cricket as much as the other activities. I though it was just a little bit boring, but the boys though it was great.

On the other days we did tennis, taekwondo, athletics, tai chi, bocce, rugby league, gymnastics, aerobics and hockey. We really learned a lot about many different kinds of sport and we got pretty fit as well. Because I enjoyed softball so much, I have decided to do softball as my sport next year.

Sport and Healthy Lifestyles Week

Last week our school had a Sport and Healthy Lifestyles Week. The best day for me was Monday, because on Monday we had three activities—yoga, softball and cricket.

We first had yoga with Mrs Rowe and Mrs Godleman. We did all kinds of stretches and exercises. We also did the “salute to the sun”. Mrs Godleman told us that in India they do the “salute to the sun” at dawn when the sun comes up. The children also do it at school in the morning. I liked yoga. It was very relaxing but it wasn’t my favourite thing of the day.

After recess, we had softball with two instructors called Craig and Andrew. Before we started, the instructors explained the basic rules. Our team got the field first while the other team got to bat. I almost got a catch, but josh pushed me out of the way and then he didn’t even catch it himself! Then it came time for our team to bat. My first hit wasn’t a very good hit and I got out. But my next two hits were really good (for me, anyway) and I go two home runs! I was extremely happy. I liked softball. It was my favourite activity of the day.

After lunch, we had cricket with an instructor called David. We were split into two groups. One group got to bowl at wickets while the other group got to hit balls at little cones. I got to bat. I didn’t like cricket as much as the other activities. I thought it was just a little bit boring, but the boys though it was great.
